Hypothyroidism
Etiology and Pathophysiology
1. The thyroid gland hormones are responsible for carbohydrate, protein, and fat metabolism requires by the body cells and for calcium regulation with the help of the parathyroid glands.
2. myxedema is a condition when the thyroid does not produce enough hormones.
3. Secondary hypothyroidism is caused by lack of secretions of TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) of the pituitary gland or over treatment of Hyperthyroidism.
4. Low levels of thyroid hormone decrease metabolism in the body.
5. Hashimoto's thyroiditis is an autoimmune disorder that destroys thyroid tissue.

clinical manifestations
Depending on the degree of production of thyroid hormone the clinical manifestations will range. Everything will eventually slow down including metabolism, weight gain, and increased intolerance to the cold.
Signs and Symptoms
1. Increased intolerance to the cold.
2. Decreased Respirations
3. Decreased cardiac output
4. Renal failure
5. Non pitting edema of extremities
6. Respiratory failure that may result in death.

Hyperthyroidism
Etiology and Pathophysiology
1.)The thyroid gland hormones are responsible for carbohydrate, protein, and fat metabolism requires by the body cells and for calcium regulation with the help of the parathyroid glands.
2.) Graves’ disease is a form of hyperthyroidism and is caused by excessive thyroid hormone production of the T3 and T4 hormone.
3.) Secondary hyperthyroidism is caused by hyper secretion of TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) by the pituitary gland.
4.) Also a tumor on the thyroid may also cause excessive secretion of TSH
5.)Radiation is also another factor for increased hormone production.

Clinical Manifestations
Depending on the degree of production of thyroid hormone the clinical manifestations will range. Everything will seem increased such as edema in the anterior portion of the neck because of an enlarged thyroid (goiter). Also because of increased swelling behind the eyes the eyes will bulge out and cause the eyelids to not be able to cover the eyeball completely resulting in dry itchy eyes.
Signs and symptoms
1. High temperature.
2. Increased heart rate
3. High blood pressure
4. Restlessness
5. Decreased mental acuity
6. Goiter on neck.
